Also known as the "Hairy Hermit," these breed from Panama south to Bolivia. They feed only on flowers such as Heliconia which have petal length and curvature matching their bills. Most other hummingbirds are not as fussy. Unlike many hummingbirds, males defend their nesting areas. Their bills are yellow on the underside and black on top. The birds in Tobago, Trinidad and Grenada are a subspecies slightly different from those in Amazonia. (Tobago) |
