Flamingos were a common sight in Walvis Bay. These were Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), but the lagoon also had many Lesser Flamingos (Phoenicopterus minor). In February there sometimes were 35,000 Flamingos in Walvis Bay. They moved to Etosha to breed and nest in fresh water when the rains arrived there. Greater Flamingoes have long lifespans, with one in the Adelade Zoo known to be over 75 years old.
