After climbing another stairway above the 99 Steps we reached what is now called "Blackbeard's Castle." This was actually built by the Danes in 1679 as a watchtower named "Skytsborg." We do not believe it was ever used by Edward Teach, the notorious pirate nicknamed "Blackbeard." However, a new name and a few flags transformed this old tower into a tourist attraction.
