The Danes built dozens of "step-streets" in the mid-1700s to get up and down the hills within Charlotte Amalie. The bricks were brought from Denmark as ballast in the holds of sailing ships. This stairway (actually 103 steps) was part of the "Historic Walking Tour" route which we pursued.
