Amur Falcons (Falco amurensis) in Kruger National Park. They are named for their Asian breeding grounds around the Amur River north of the Himalayas between China and Russia. Their bizarre migration goes east of the Himalayas to India, then from southern India across the Indian Ocean nonstop to Mozambique and on to South Africa. On their return trip they go up the east coast of Africa before heading east into India and back to the breeding grounds. They arrive in Kruger National Park in November or December and stay until the last summer rains, which are usually in March. They are particularly fond of grasshoppers and termites, living mostly on insects caught in the air.
