These outstanding dancers are from Lifou Island and are dancing with the Kanak flag even though theirs is a French country. This was one of several New Caledonian groups at this 2002 Melanesian Arts Festival. Fiji had a few representatives but Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands didn't send anybody because they could not afford it. This festival is held every four years, and this year it was mainly a showcase for groups from Vanuatu islands.
