These woodcarvings are traditional designs which were used for tattoos in the old days. People with these tattoos were "owners" of the designs and other people needed permission to copy them. Chief Johnstar made these carvings to preserve some old designs but the wood is slowly deteriorating. The old customs are disappearing and the old designs probably will be lost.
