The Surin and Similan islands are the tops of a drowned mountain range. The sea level 10,000 years ago was about 300 meters lower than it is now, and then these would have been fairly high granite mountains. The steep rocky hillsides do not have very much topsoil, and landslides like this are not uncommon during the rainy season.
