Much of the island is devoted to cashew nut trees, often planted in lovely groves like this. The cashew nut tree is native to Central and South America. The nut grows within an outer shell at the end of an edible fruit. The nut is more valuable than the fruit. Here they are not collected until they fall to the ground. This was our first opportunity to learn about cashew growing and processing.
