This is the oldest stupa in Sri Lanka and probably the oldest visible in the world. It was constructed in the third century BC and is said to contain the right collarbone of Buddha. It was modified in 1862 to a conventional bell shape and a height of 19 meters (62 feet). The 41 pillars still standing were part of the 176 which once surrounded the dagoba in four concentric circles, a unique feature. |
