This is the sacred bodhi tree, "Sri Maha Bodhi," planted more than 2000 years ago as a cutting from the tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment. It was brought to Sri Lanka by Princess Sangamitta, sister of Mahinda who introduced Buddhist teachings to Sri Lanka. This tree has been carefully tended ever since, and is the oldest documented tree in the world. A cutting from this tree was taken back to India to replace its parent after that older tree died. Thousands of devotees come to make offerings and pray at this site, especially on full moon days.
