Guardstones were a common feature at the entrances to ancient Sri Lankan buildings. This is a particularly fine example, with the guardian figure standing under a seven-headed cobra, a mythological "Naga." He holds a pot of lotus flowers and a branch, both symbols of prosperity and plenty. On either side are mythological dragon-like creatures which consume everything eventually, starting with all the things in the arch above. On the left side of this picture just above the dragon's mouth are two people, perhaps representing the prince who renounced the throne of Anuradhapura to marry the lovely lady who was a commoner. Two thousand years of weather have blurred some details but this is still very beautiful.
