On 13 September 1942 seven Japanese destroyers shelled Henderson Field. Allied naval vessels and many aircraft of both sides also engaged in battles in this area. So many ships were sunk here that it became known as "Iron Bottom Sound." The Florida Islands are visible in the distance.
