We saw several foxholes along ridges in this area and continued to see many foxholes in other areas visited. We also walked to a Japanese observation post (Mt. Austen) overlooking Henderson Field - an airstrip the Americans really wanted to take over. While the Battle of Bloody Ridge was going on another Japanese unit attacked Mt. Austen. This was also repulsed. For two days the Japanese had flung themselves against the American defenders on the ridge and at one stage had for a short time broken through the defense line. Once again the Japanese communications failed causing a breakdown in control. Decimated and exhausted the Japanese fell back into the jungle having lost 3,500 men. |
