Milford Sound is the only South Island west coast fijord accessible by car. The road crosses the mountains via the 1,270-meter-long, 3.81-meter-high Homer Tunnel which was opened in 1955 after 20 years of construction. On the way down the steep hill from the tunnel we noticed that we needed new brake pads. We took a boat trip on "Lady Bowen" to see the spectacular scenery from 3-5 pm for $168 New Zealand for the four of us.
