The Petrified Forest Park is in a valley west of Khorixas. About 260 million years ago the trunks of large cone-bearing trees were transported here by a flood. They were petrified in silica and partially buried in sandstone. This became a protected National Monument in 1950 and now can be seen only with a park guide. The park headquarters buildings are in the foreground. |
