This gang is using a small machine to thresh wheat. This machine is probably the only one used during the entire process of planting, harvesting and processing the crop. We saw other groups threshing by hand without a machine. Wheat requires much less water than rice, so can be grown outside the wet season. Much of the work we observed was done in groups. We do not know if the fields are community-owned or if there is a tradition of helping neighbors.
