Sulamani was the last of Bagan's great temples we visited. We were warned that bicycles would not be able to get there over the sandy roads but we made it easily. This was more peaceful than most of the temples because fewer tourists visited and there were fewer vendors. This temple was known as "The Crowning Jewel" and was constructed around 1181 using more sophisticated styles than the earlier Bagan periods. Its interior light, brickwork, carved stucco and frescos were all praised. The gilded tower is a reconstruction of the original which was destroyed by a 1975 earthquake. |
