We climbed these steep stairs for wonderful sunset views over Bagan from the top terrace. This was built at the center of his kingdom by King Anawrahta after he conquered Thaton in 1057. This was the first monument in Bagan to feature staircases up five square terraces to the round base of the stupa. The stupa was supposed to contain a hair of the Buddha. The hti (umbrella-like structure at the very top) was knocked off by the 1975 earthquake and replaced by a new one.
