The Nandamannya Pahto dated from the mid-13th century and was celebrated for its frescoes. This shows a portion of the ceiling, which must have been magnificent in its day. A French epigraphist was apparently shocked in 1916 at the paintings of topless young women erotically attempting to divert Buddha from meditation. Those paintings didn't seem shocking to us, and it is difficult to imagine a modern Frenchman who would be shocked to see "topless" women. |
