"Senida" is a group from Sarawak. The sape is a traditional Sarawakian instrument made from a single piece of wood which can be as much as thirty feet in length. Very large sapes are part of the furniture in traditional longhouses and we wonder how they are played. The modern sape-type instruments in this photo are called "gambus." These can be played in either a major or a minor key and have electronic pickups for amplifiers. The one in the background is somewhat like a bass guitar. This group played relatively traditional music and probably learned much from interactions with other musicians at this RWMF. |
