This Panther Chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) is not the one in the previous two photos. Here it is possible to see the three toes on the inside of the foot which are fused together and the two outside toes which are also fused. This is called a "didactyl" (literally meaning "two toed") arrangement. Each of the five toes on each of the four feet has a little claw. Tong-like toes with claws enable chameleons to hold tightly to small branches. They sometimes go out to the ends of very small branches to evade predators too heavy to follow. |
