This closeup of a Panther Chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) shows one of its marvelous eyes. Eyelids cover all of the eyeball except a small hole in the center. The two eyes can operate independently, letting the animal look in two different directions simultaneously. Looking at two totally different images at the same time must require real multitasking in the chameleon's brain. The eyes can also be used together, giving excellent depth perception when aiming the tongue towards a tasty insect. |
