This lakana (outrigger canoe) was poled towards the village on an afternoon when both wind and current were against it. Without motors, poles were often used to move Malagasy boats for short distances in shallow water. This canoe had exceptionally nice paint and looked new. There was no sail but the mast and rigging looked ready. The man's outfit matched the boat: blue top with red and white underneath.
