This is a Rock Hyrax (Procavia capensis) which South Africans call a "Dassie." This rodent is about the size of a woodchuck and can be found in many rocky areas of southern South Africa. Its teeth look dangerous but it is a vegetarian. This photo was taken by Hilary when we visited the Boulders penguin colony near Simonstown. |
