The waterfront clock tower was completed in 1882 with a tidal gauge in the floor and served as the original Port Captain's office. It was restored in 1997 and is now a National Monument and the focal point of an area with many shops and restaurants. This waterfront is visited by more foreign tourists than any other place in South Africa.
