Village Weaver making a new nest at Zululand Yacht Club in Richards Bay. Each male builds 3 to 5 kidney-shaped nests (9 to 14 hours each) with green strips of reeds, grass leaves or palm blades attached to thin branches of a free-standing tree. After completion, the male defends the territory around his nests while displaying to the females, attracting their attention to his nests. When accepted by a female, he adds a short entrance tunnel underneath the entrance. The female lines the interior with soft grass heads and feathers, lays 2-5 eggs and incubates them for about 12 days. The male assists in feeding the chicks, which fledge after 17 to 21 days. The nests are never used more than once |
