Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) in Kruger National Park. This is the largest of the African eagles, weighing almost 14 pounds, 32" long with a wingspan of about 6'4". They are found south of the Sahara from Senegal to Somalia and south to the Cape. In some areas birds as large as Storks form an important part of their diet, while in other areas their diet is largely hyrax and small antelopes. Impala calves are sometimes taken, as well as monkeys, mongoose, serval cats, jackals, snakes, large lizards, young domestic goats, and lambs. |
