Trumpeter Hornbill (Bycanistes bucinator) at Zululand Yacht Club in Richards Bay. These Hornbills attacked nests of Weaver Birds, perhaps hoping to dine on eggs or chicks. These are intelligent and can live 20 years. Hornbills are unique in having their first two neck vertebrae fused to support their large bill. The casque (top part of the bill) is probably an indicator of the individual's age, sex and status. |
