White-fronted Bee-eater (Merops bullockoides) in Kruger National Park. White-fronted bee-eaters are widely distributed in sub-equatorial Africa in open country. Bees are their primary diet when available, but they eat other insects when necessary. They have a complex family social system with colonies comprising family groups that help with breeding. Even the non-breeding birds help raise the chicks. Their eggs are laid in holes in cliffs or in banks of earth. |
