We saw this in Saldanha Bay at the Postberg Reserve and were told it was a Black Wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) also known as the White-tailed Wildebeest. We are not positive about this identification because this does not have a white tail and looked much like the Blue Wildebeest we saw further north. All Wildebeest are noisy, constantly emitting low moans and, if disturbed, explosive snorts. When alarmed, the animal swishes its long tail back and forth so vigorously that the loud whistling or hissing sound it creates can be heard for almost a kilometer. |
