Summary of 1994

SPRING

Jerry painted our gaff-rigged schooner "Arctracer" at Huckens Boatyard near Jacksonville, Florida, then sailed north to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Jerry's parents sailed part of the way with him. We worked on the house in Durham, NH to get it ready to rent. Son Ben graduated from SUNY Purchase.

SUMMER

We moved aboard in July while "Arctracer" was anchored off Kittery Point, Maine and did some day sails with family and friends. While sailing north to our northernmost anchorage at Cutler, Maine, we saw tuna, whales, seals, loons, and eiders; caught mackerel; contacted a sailmaker for new sails; hiked on Monhegan Island and Isle Au Haut; visited Matinicus Rock where we saw puffins; visited friends who own a boatyard on Cranberry Island (in the fog), and spent time at Roque Island which we considered our favorite place in Maine.

FALL

We left Maine in September; lost our aluminum dinghy in Buzzards Bay in a squall; bought a used "Fatty Knees" dinghy while in Newport, Rhode Island; moored at 79th Street Boat Basin in NYC to visit daughter Hilary and friends Steve & Helen; sailed overnight past New Jersey; had a crab feast in Annapolis with daughter Dorothy & Dan; started down the Intracoastal Waterway at Norfolk; had a quiet break at Ocracoke; motored for days through the "Dredged Ditch" but had good bird watching; went aground several times and had to kedge off; missed Hurricane Gordon in Georgetown, South Carolina; received our new sails in Beaufort, SC; went beachcombing on Cumberland Island; and left "Arctracer" in Jacksonville, Florida while we went back to Vermont for Christmas.

WINTER

Visited family and friends up north; got married on December 21st in Norwich, Vermont; enjoyed our honeymoon in the Bahamas and beyond.
