In 1991, our second sailing season, we sailed the Rhodes 19 around Long Island on a two-week adventure. We sailed down the Hudson, through New York Harbor, out in the Atlantic for 100 miles (with exploration of Great South Bay), around Montauk Point, through Long Island Sound (with a side trip up the Connecticut River), through Hellgate and the East River and back to Ossining. There were wonderful hours sailing under spinnaker in the Atlantic, scary hours sailing across the Sound through waves, peaceful hours in secluded anchorages and hectic hours dodging big boats around New York City. We arrived home just before Hurricane Bob. (See full details) The whole experience convinced us that cruising was wonderful!
