The rudders of "Fastback 43s" are designed to kick up when they hit something when the boat is moving forward. If the rudder hits a rock, for example, the bottom part of the rudder swings up and back to allow the rock to pass beneath. This keeps the rudder from being badly damaged. An elastic shock cord pulls the rudder back into position. The aluminum piping above the rudder is a step which can be swung down to help swimmers climb aboard.
