After the ordination day ceremonies at Lehali Village we took Chief Nicholson (red & white shirt) and his family home to Diver's Bay. Chief Nicholson is "Chief Vatumare" - the custom chief of Torba Province (Torres and Banks Islands.) He was voted to the positon by custom chiefs from the islands of Mota Lava, Mota and Vanua Lava. Custom chiefs have duties quite different from village chiefs (who are somewhat like mayors.)
