One day three sailboats sailed from Ranon Bay to Baouma volcanic stream. Relaxing in the hot water was nice, but we were distressed to see villagers collecting megapode ("incubator bird") eggs. These birds laid eggs in holes in the sand which is heated by underground volcanic activity. They do not sit on their nests. The young birds hatch fully feathered, are able to run around immediately and fly within 24 hours. A local chief told us later that these "swamp hens" are not endangered and collecting their eggs was OK. |
