Gordon is a fisherman on Oua Island. He catches octopus in deep water with a lure made by tying a stick to a cowrie shell. The Tongan name is "maka" (stone or rock) "feke" (octopus). According to legend, Rat was feasting on shellfish way out on the reef when he realized that the rising tide had cut off his route back to land. He asked Octopus for help and Octopus gave him a ride to shore on top of his head. Rat jumped off and ran away, and then Octopus realized Rat had made a nasty mess on his head. Ever since, Octopus has been very angry at Rat and tries to kill him. We heard variations of this legend on other Pacific islands. The lure does look somewhat like a rat and Gordon does use it successfully. |
