Some people at Ko Panyi keep baby Gibbons to earn money. Many tourists are willing to pay to hold a wonderfully cute and cuddly baby Gibbon and to be photographed with one. Unfortunately, Gibbons are an endangered species and it is not legal to keep them in captivity. In order to get the cute babies the wild Gibbon mothers are usually killed. When the babies grow past the cute stage they usually become unmanageable (even when drugged) and are then killed. We were not aware of this when we first visited Ko Panyi. There are some efforts to stop this business and rehabilitate captive Gibbons but much more action is required to save this species from extinction.
