This is the landing at the port of Jamestown, practically the only place to land on St Helena. It has been used since the island was discovered in 1502 by a Portuguese navigator. Large ships must anchor offshore and transfer all goods and passengers in small boats. Seas are often rough enough to require ship passengers brought ashore in a cage lifted by a crane. |
