In 1829 the Saint Helena Railway Company built a cableway to lift supplies from Jamestown to the fort atop the hill. In 1871 it was rebuilt as a long, steep staircase by the Royal Engineers. Now it is primarily a tourist attraction, with visitors receiving a certificate if they manage to ascend its 699 steps. Jerry's acrophobia kept him away while Nina and Hilary made the climb.
