There were several old forts on the island. Some were on the tops of high hills and easily defended against invading troops. This "High Knoll Fort" was apparently to be used as a last resort when the rest of the island was overrun. It could hold all of the island's poulation. The present fort was built in 1874 on the site of the original 1798 citadel. Like so many military creations, we do not believe it was ever needed. We could not go inside because it has partially collapsed. |
