Napoleon was exiled to St Helena in 1815 but no suitable residence was available when he arrived. After viewing the site chosen for his permanent home he returned towards Jamestown and was delighted by the Briars Valley. William Balcombe owned the land and Napoleon arranged to stay in Balcombe's small summer pavillion. He stayed there for two months and became very friendly with Balcombe's lively young daughter Betsy. |
