This is the site of the airport which was under construction when we visited. Temporary housing for imported workers is in the foreground. The airport and the new port under construction in Rupert's Bay will cause many changes. No longer will passengers and cargo be limited to the RMS St Helena (which will be retired). Cruise ships will dock at the new port. Jamestown will no longer be the only entry/exit point and will lose many associated businesses. The formerly isolated island will become another tourist destination. Large hotels and resorts will be built at new sites in various locations. Cellphones and ATM machines will be introduced. The character of this currently unique island and its 5000 inhabitants will be significantly modified. We are pleased to have seen it before the transformation. |
