These tea "pluckers" (the term used in Sri Lanka) were distracted from their work for a few moments by our passing train. All pluckers are women and most are Tamils originally brought from southern India in the 1800s by the British. The Tamils still maintain their own language and traditions and form an important Hindu minority within mainly Buddhist Sri Lanka.
