Muhammed Ashok was a tuk-tuk driver in Anuradhapura. We met him in a liquor store, though his Muslim religion prohibited alcohol. He subsequently demonstrated ability to gulp more than half-a-liter of arrack (30% alcohol) in an evening. He often rented a friend's van to take tourists on day trips, and said he would take us to Sigiriya and Dambulla for a good price. His price did seem fair, so we went with him rather than on much cheaper but less convenient buses. When we reached our destination he announced that the price he had quoted was per-person so we would have to pay double that amount. We should have known something like this might happen because we had earlier indications that he wasn't trustworthy. |
