Buddhist monks have almost no possessions and rely on the generosity of lay followers even to eat. Some of Anuradhapura's ancient monks had their squatting plates elaborately carved with "worldly luxury" images. This enabled them to show their contempt for such items. Some of their urinals showed the god of wealth showering coins into the hole. This one has lions, probably representing royalty, on each side of the hole and "devouring dragons" along the borders.
