Semi-circular "moonstones" were at the thresholds of many important buildings. The carvings were highly symbolic to Buddhists. The lion, bull, elephant, horse sequence was repeated in an outer ring. An inner ring contained birds (which look like geese here) and other concentric circles contained vines. This is a fine example of ancient moonstone carving.
