These three stone-covered pits contain "masi" (usually cassava mashed and fermented into a cheese-like substance which stays edible for at least a year.) This is their emergency food supply, and each family has some. Cyclones occasionally wipe out all gardens and trees, and until the gardens regrow they have to survive on masi.
