This statue was in the Thian Hock Keng Chinese temple, which started as a joss house in 1821. The temple is now a national monument, and underwent restoration from 1998 to 2000. We do not know the name or significance of this character, probably derived from multi-armed Hindu divinities such as Vishnu. Those very old gods were carried over into Buddhism, with a variety of modifications and adaptations. |
