Hilary is viewing a typical scene on Mt. Ruapehu at the time we were there in 1998. Nothing green was visible, all vegetation having been destroyed by the last eruption in 1995. It was difficult to walk on the loose rocks, but we enjoyed walking in snow at altitude 2000 meters.
